Cape Soya
宗谷岬
It is the northernmost cape of Japan overlooking Sakhalin only 43 km. The cape has a number of monuments and buildings that are indispensable in telling Wakkanai's history. It is also registered as "Hokkaido Heritage".
Soya Hills / White road
宗谷丘陵 / 白い道
The Soya Hills, which spreads behind the northernmost part of Japan, Cape Soya, is a landform formed during the ice age with gentle slopes. The periglacial landform is also registered as a Hokkaido Heritage Site. There are 57 wind farms in the vast hills. The footpath “White road”, covered with scallop shells over 3 km, is a masterpiece going straight toward the beautiful sea.


Wakkanai west coast

It is a coastline that extends for about 20km to the north and south of the Japan Sea coast. The national road that runs along the coast and belongs to Rishiri Rebun Sarobetsu National Park is commonly called the "Orolon Line" and is a popular driving course. It has a pleasant sea breeze and hamanas bloom along the road, and there is also a superb view point where you can see Rishiri Fuji on the way, making it a photo spot.
Hokukmon Shrine
北門神社
Being close to the Wakkanai city area, Hokukmon Shrine is famous as the northernmost shrine in Japan where you can get a red seal. The shrine here has a rare crab-shaped fortune. It is an attractive fortune that appeals not only cute but also local specialties.
